Description
The Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation, 49mm) is Apple’s most rugged and capable smartwatch, launched in September 2022. It targets endurance athletes, outdoor adventurers, explorers, and water sports enthusiasts with a bold, durable design built for extreme conditions.
Design and Build
• Case: Aerospace-grade titanium (corrosion-resistant and lightweight) in a natural titanium finish.
• Dimensions: 49mm height × 44mm width × 14.4mm depth (some sources list ~12mm depth for the main body).
• Weight: 61.3g (titanium case).
• Display Protection: Flat sapphire crystal front (highly scratch-resistant), with the case rising to protect the edges. Ceramic and sapphire crystal back.
• Durability: 100m water resistance (suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and recreational scuba diving up to 40m with the Ocean Band), IP6X dust resistance, and MIL-STD 810H certification for extreme temperatures, altitude, and rugged use.
• Buttons: Larger Digital Crown with orange accent for better grip, side button, and a new customizable Action button (orange) for quick access to functions like workout start, compass, flashlight, or siren.
• Bands: Compatible with specialized 49mm bands — Trail Loop (lightweight for running), Alpine Loop (secure for hiking/climbing), and Ocean Band (for water activities). Standard Apple Watch bands also work with adapters if needed.
Display
• Size: 49mm Always-On Retina LTPO2 OLED display.
• Resolution: 410 × 502 pixels (~1.92-inch viewable area).
• Display Area: Approximately 1185 sq mm (the largest and brightest Apple Watch display at launch).
• Brightness: Up to 2000 nits (twice as bright as previous Apple Watches for excellent outdoor visibility).
• Features: Flat sapphire crystal, wide color gamut, and a dedicated Wayfinder watch face with a built-in compass and room for up to eight complications.
Performance and Storage
• Chip: S8 SiP with 64-bit dual-core processor (based on Series 8 technology).
• Storage: 32GB.
• Wireless: GPS + Cellular models available, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 5.3, U1 Ultra Wideband chip, and precision dual-frequency GPS (L1 + L5 for better accuracy in challenging environments).
Battery and Charging
• Battery Life: Up to 36 hours of normal use; extends to up to 60 hours in Low Power Mode — the best battery life of any Apple Watch at the time.
• Charging: Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery (around 542mAh). Fast charging via USB-C magnetic cable (0-80% in about 45 minutes).
Health, Fitness, and Safety Features
• Sensors: Blood oxygen sensor (Blood Oxygen app — availability may vary by region due to regulations), electrical heart sensor (ECG app), third-generation optical heart sensor, high-g accelerometer (up to 256 g-forces for crash detection), gyroscope, always-on altimeter, compass, barometer, temperature sensor, ambient light sensor, and water temperature sensor.
• Health Tracking: Heart rate monitoring (high/low/irregular rhythm notifications), sleep tracking, cycle tracking, VO2 max, and more.
• Fitness: Advanced metrics for running, hiking, cycling, swimming, diving, and endurance sports. Includes precision dual-frequency GPS, elevation tracking, and specialized apps like Oceanic+ for diving.
• Safety: Fall Detection, Crash Detection, 86-decibel emergency siren (audible up to 180 meters), and Emergency SOS.
• Other: Apple Pay, GymKit, and full watchOS experience (upgradable to the latest supported versions).
Key Highlights for Adventurers
The Apple Watch Ultra stands out with its larger size for better readability, extra-long battery for multi-day trips, rugged titanium construction, Action button for instant access in tough conditions, and enhanced GPS accuracy. It excels in environments where standard Apple Watches might fall short — extreme sports, deep outdoors, or water activities.
Note: This is the first-generation (Ultra 1) model with the S8 chip and 2000-nit display. Later models (Ultra 2 and beyond) offer upgrades like a brighter 3000-nit display, S9/S10 chip, more storage, and additional features (e.g., Double Tap gesture), but the Ultra 1 remains a powerful, capable device for most users, especially at reduced pricing on the secondary market.
