Description
The Apple MacBook Pro with M1 Pro (released October 2021, discontinued January 2023) marked a major redesign in Apple’s professional laptop lineup. It introduced the M1 Pro chip (a more powerful successor to the base M1), a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display with mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion, the return of physical function keys (replacing the Touch Bar), and expanded ports. Apple offered it in two sizes: 14-inch and 16-inch. Both share the same core architecture but differ slightly in base configurations, battery size, weight, and display scale.
Key Design and Build
• Finishes: Silver or Space Gray.
• Keyboard: Magic Keyboard with full-height function keys, Touch ID sensor, and no Touch Bar.
• Trackpad: Large Force Touch trackpad.
• Webcam: 1080p FaceTime HD camera (improved over previous generations).
• Audio: High-fidelity six-speaker sound system with force-cancelling woofers and support for spatial audio (Dolby Atmos).
• Dimensions and Weight:
◦ 14-inch: Thinner and lighter (around 3.5 lbs / 1.6 kg).
◦ 16-inch: Larger chassis (around 4.7–4.8 lbs / 2.1–2.2 kg depending on config).
Display
Both models feature a Liquid Retina XDR display with mini-LED backlighting, extreme dynamic range, and ProMotion adaptive refresh rate technology (up to 120Hz, with fixed options like 60Hz for battery saving).
• 14-inch: 14.2-inch, 3024 x 1964 resolution at 254 ppi. Up to 1000 nits sustained brightness (1600 nits peak for HDR), 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, P3 wide color gamut, True Tone.
• 16-inch: 16.2-inch, 3456 x 2234 resolution at 254 ppi. Same brightness, contrast, and color performance.26
This display excels for photo/video editing, HDR content, and general productivity with deep blacks and vibrant colors.
Chip: Apple M1 Pro
The M1 Pro is a system-on-chip (SoC) built on a 5nm process with 33.7 billion transistors and unified memory architecture (memory shared efficiently between CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine).
• CPU: Up to 10-core (8 performance cores + 2 efficiency cores). Base 14-inch model has an 8-core variant (6 performance + 2 efficiency).
• GPU: 14-core or 16-core options.
• Neural Engine: 16-core for machine learning tasks.
• Memory Bandwidth: 200 GB/s.
• Media Engine: Hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW (great for video professionals).10
Unified Memory: Starts at 16GB, configurable up to 32GB on M1 Pro configs (higher on M1 Max variants).
Performance: The M1 Pro delivers excellent multi-core CPU performance and significantly stronger GPU/graphics capabilities than the base M1, making it suitable for demanding tasks like 4K/8K video editing, 3D rendering, software development, and machine learning—while remaining highly power-efficient with long battery life.
Storage
• Starts at 512GB SSD (some 16-inch base configs at 1TB).
• Configurable up to 8TB.
• Very fast SSD speeds (up to ~7.4 GB/s reads in some reports).
Ports and Connectivity
A major upgrade over prior Touch Bar models:
• MagSafe 3 charging port (fast charging supported).
• Three Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C ports (up to 40Gb/s, supports charging and DisplayPort).
• HDMI 2.0 port (supports external displays).
• SDXC card slot (full-size, convenient for photographers).
• 3.5mm headphone jack.
• Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0.13
External Display Support (M1 Pro): Up to two displays at 6K resolution (or similar).
Battery and Power
• Excellent battery life: Up to ~17 hours (14-inch) or ~21 hours (16-inch) of video playback, depending on usage.
• Charging: 96W USB-C adapter (14-inch) or 140W (16-inch). Fast charging capable via MagSafe 3 or USB-C.
Base Configurations (Examples)
• 14-inch M1 Pro base: 8-core CPU / 14-core GPU, 16GB unified memory, 512GB SSD.
• 14-inch higher: 10-core CPU / 16-core GPU options.
• 16-inch M1 Pro base: 10-core CPU / 16-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB or 1TB SSD.4
(Upgrades for memory/storage were only available at purchase time.)
Who It’s For
This model targets professionals needing strong performance in a portable form (video editors, photographers, developers, musicians) without the extreme power draw of Intel-based predecessors. It offers a huge leap in efficiency, display quality, and port selection compared to the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro.
Note: As of 2026, newer MacBook Pros with M3/M4-series chips offer further improvements in performance, efficiency, and features (e.g., higher memory options, better ray tracing). However, the M1 Pro models remain capable for many workflows and often represent good value on the used/refurbished market. Always check current macOS compatibility for software support.
