Description
The Amaran 200x (by Aputure) is a compact 200W bi-color COB LED video light (Bowens Mount point-source fixture) designed for content creators, photographers, videographers, and small studio setups. It delivers strong output, flexible color temperature control, and reliable color accuracy at an accessible price point.
The current version is the Amaran 200x S (released around 2023), which features an upgraded dual-blue LED chipset for significantly improved spectral quality, higher SSI scores (better skin tones and fidelity to real tungsten/daylight sources), and refined performance while retaining the same compact form factor and core features as the original 200x.
Key Specifications (Amaran 200x S)
• Power Output: 200W (lamp head); max consumption ~229W.
• Color Temperature (CCT): 2700K–6500K (smooth bi-color mixing from warm tungsten to cool daylight).
• Color Accuracy (significantly improved on S version):
◦ CRI: 95+
◦ TLCI: 96–98+
◦ CQS: 96–97+
◦ SSI (Tungsten/D32): 90+
◦ SSI (D56/Daylight): 89+
◦ TM-30 Rf (avg.): 96–97
◦ TM-30 Rg (avg.): 101
• Brightness / Photometrics (approximate values; varies slightly by source and exact model):
◦ Bare bulb (naked, ~111° beam): ~6,400 lux @ 1m (5600K)
◦ With included Hyper Reflector (~26° beam on S; originally ~55° on non-S): Up to ~45,400–51,600 lux @ 1m (5600K), depending on version. Strong punch for a 200W fixture.
◦ Luminous flux: ~17,000 lm.
• Dimming: 0–100% smooth, flicker-free.
• Special Effects: 9 built-in lighting FX (Paparazzi, Fireworks, Lightning, Faulty Bulb, TV, Pulsing, Strobe, Explosion, Fire).
• Power Options:
◦ AC via included universal power supply (100–240V).
◦ Battery: 48V DC input (supports optional Aputure 2-bay V-Mount or Gold-Mount battery station — not direct NP-F like some budget lights).
• Control:
◦ On-board intuitive controls with LCD screen.
◦ Sidus Link app via Bluetooth (Sidus Mesh networking for multi-light control and grouping). Range up to ~80–100m.
◦ Firmware updatable via app (OTA).
• Cooling: Active fan (generally quiet and suitable for video; low noise in most conditions).
• Mount: Universal Bowens S-type + built-in umbrella holder. Compatible with a wide range of modifiers (softboxes, barn doors, Fresnel, etc.).
• Build & Mounting: Compact lamp head with 5/8” baby pin receiver (yoke/bracket included). Lightweight and portable design.
• Dimensions (approx., bracket not included): 207 × 115 × 115 mm (~8 × 5 × 5 in).
• Weight: ~1.56–1.59 kg (3.4–3.5 lbs) for the lamp head.
• Operating Temperature: -10°C to +40°C.
Performance Highlights
The 200x S excels as a versatile key or fill light. The bi-color range allows quick matching to ambient conditions without gels. The Hyper Reflector focuses the beam for higher intensity and throw, while Bowens modifiers enable soft, flattering light for portraits or interviews. The upgraded chipset on the S model provides more natural skin tones and better spectral continuity, reducing unwanted color casts compared to the original.
It performs well for studio work, location shoots, product photography, and hybrid photo/video. Output is impressive for the size/price, equivalent in some scenarios to much more expensive fixtures when used with modifiers.
Build and What’s Typically Included
• Durable yet lightweight construction with intuitive rear panel.
• Standard kit usually includes: Lamp head, Bowens Mount Hyper Reflector, protection cover, AC power supply/adapter, AC power cable, and basic accessories (e.g., cable ties).
• No built-in battery or carrying case (case often sold separately or in bundles).
Strengths
• Excellent brightness and value — powerful enough for room illumination or bounced/diffused setups.
• High color fidelity (especially on S version) for accurate, broadcast-quality results.
• Compact, portable, and easy to use with Bowens ecosystem compatibility.
• Reliable Sidus Link app for wireless control and multi-light workflows.
• Quiet operation and solid build from Aputure/Amaran.
Limitations
• Fan noise may be noticeable in extremely quiet environments (though generally manageable).
• Battery powering requires a separate (somewhat bulky) 2-bay station — primarily AC-focused for maximum output.
• Bi-color only (no full RGB/H SI or advanced color effects like the Sutefoto P100 RGB you asked about earlier).
• No DMX or advanced pro connectivity (app + manual controls are primary).
• With certain focused optical modifiers (e.g., Fresnel), subtle warm/cool diode patterns may occasionally appear in extreme setups (a known trait of many bi-color COB lights without a mixing prism).
Comparison to Sutefoto P100 RGB
• Power & Brightness: Amaran 200x S is roughly twice the power (200W vs 100W) with stronger output, especially when focused.
• Color: Sutefoto offers full RGB + HSI + many effects (creative/vibrant colors); Amaran 200x S prioritizes high-accuracy bi-color whites (better for natural skin tones, portraits, and interviews).
• Portability: Sutefoto supports direct NP-F batteries for easy run-and-gun; Amaran uses AC or a dedicated battery station.
• Build & Ecosystem: Amaran feels more premium with superior color science, reliable app, and broad Bowens compatibility. Sutefoto is more budget/plastic-oriented.
• Best For: Amaran for clean, high-quality bi-color work with modifiers. Sutefoto if you need vibrant colors/effects and simple battery power.
This light pairs excellently with Canon EOS cameras (1500D/Rebel T7 for beginners, 7D for action, or 6D for full-frame low-light portraits) using continuous lighting setups — especially with Bowens softboxes for soft, professional illumination that complements fast primes like your 50mm or 85mm.
