Description

The Canon EOS 6D (announced September 2012, released late November 2012) is a full-frame DSLR aimed at enthusiasts and advanced amateurs seeking high image quality, excellent low-light performance, and a compact, lightweight body at a more accessible price point than Canon’s pro models like the 5D Mark III. It was marketed as an entry-level full-frame camera, offering the benefits of a 35mm full-frame sensor (no crop factor, beautiful background blur/bokeh, and wide-angle compatibility) in a smaller package. The camera features built-in Wi-Fi (for remote control and image transfer via the Canon EOS Remote app) and GPS (for geotagging) in the standard model (some regional variants like the 6D (N) omitted these). It uses the Canon EF lens mount and is compatible with the full range of EF lenses (but not EF-S). A magnesium alloy chassis provides solid build quality with some weather and dust resistance. Shutter durability is rated for approximately 100,000–150,000 cycles.

Key Features and Overview
The EOS 6D emphasizes image quality and portability over high-speed action. It includes creative modes (P, Tv, Av, M), Scene Intelligent Auto, HDR mode, multiple exposures, and in-camera RAW processing. The DIGIC 5+ processor enables 14-bit image processing for smooth tones and colors. It supports silent shooting modes and an electronic level (single-axis).

Image Quality and Sensor
• Sensor: 20.2 effective megapixel full-frame CMOS (approx. 35.8 × 23.9 mm). Total pixels ≈ 20.6 million.
• Processor: DIGIC 5+.
• Resolution: Maximum still image 5472 × 3648 pixels (3:2 aspect). Supports JPEG (various sizes/quality), 14-bit RAW (CR2), and RAW+JPEG.
• ISO Sensitivity: 100–25600 standard, expandable to L: 50 and H1: 51200 / H2: 102400. Excellent low-light performance with relatively low noise for its era, thanks to larger pixels (≈6.55 µm) and the full-frame design.
• Image Quality: Strong dynamic range, rich colors, and pleasing tonal gradation. Ideal for portraits, landscapes, travel, and low-light scenes. Features like Auto Lighting Optimizer and peripheral illumination correction are included.

Autofocus and Shooting Performance
• AF System: 11-point AF with 1 center cross-type point (sensitive to f/5.6; extra sensitivity at f/2.8 for the center). Center point works down to EV -3 (very low light, roughly moonlight levels).
• AF Modes: One-Shot, AI Servo, AI Focus. AF Microadjustment supported.
• Continuous Shooting: Up to 4.5 frames per second (fps). Buffer supports decent bursts (e.g., dozens of JPEGs depending on card speed).
• Shutter: Electronically controlled focal-plane shutter; 30 sec to 1/4000 sec, plus Bulb. X-sync at 1/180 sec.
• Viewfinder: Optical pentaprism with approx. 97% coverage and 0.71× magnification. Interchangeable focusing screens available (including grid and super precision matte). Includes electronic level and basic overlays. Dioptric adjustment -3.0 to +1.0 m⁻¹.

Video Recording
• Resolution: Full HD 1920 × 1080 at 30/25/24 fps; 720p at 60/50 fps.
• Format: MOV (H.264 compression) with linear PCM audio.
• Features: Manual exposure control, ISO adjustment during recording. External stereo microphone input (3.5mm). No 60p in Full HD, no headphone jack, and autofocus in video is contrast-detection via Live View (slower and less smooth than modern systems). Full-frame sensor delivers shallow depth of field in video.

Display and Build
• LCD Monitor: 3.0-inch (7.6 cm) Clear View TFT LCD with approx. 1,040,000 dots. Fixed (non-articulating, non-touch). Anti-reflective coating.
• Build: Compact and lightweight for a full-frame DSLR. Magnesium alloy sections with weather sealing. Comfortable grip.
• Storage: Single SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot (UHS-I compatible).
• Battery: LP-E6 rechargeable lithium-ion. CIPA-rated for approx. 1090 shots (at 23°C, viewfinder shooting with 50% AE/50% flash). Optional BG-E13 battery grip for extended shooting or vertical controls.

Connectivity and Other Features
• Wireless: Built-in Wi-Fi for remote shooting/control and image transfer. GPS for geotagging (on most models).
• Flash: No built-in pop-up flash. Hot shoe for external Speedlites (supports wireless control with compatible units). No PC sync terminal.
• Metering: 63-zone iFCL (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) dual-layer system. Evaluative, partial, spot, and center-weighted options.
• White Balance: Auto, presets, custom, and bracketing.
• Drive Modes: Single, continuous, silent single/continuous, self-timer, remote.
• Other: Live View with face detection, Depth-of-field preview, HDMI output, USB 2.0. Multiple exposure and HDR modes in-camera.
• Dimensions (W × H × D): Approx. 144.5 × 110.5 × 71.2 mm (5.7 × 4.4 × 2.8 in).
• Weight: Approx. 680 g (body only) / 755 g (CIPA standard with battery and card). One of the lightest full-frame DSLRs at launch.

Strengths
• Outstanding full-frame image quality and low-light/ISO performance.
• Compact, lightweight body that’s travel-friendly.
• Built-in Wi-Fi + GPS (rare at the time).
• Excellent center AF in very dim conditions.
• Good battery life and value as an entry to full-frame photography.

Limitations
• Basic 11-point AF system (only one cross-type point; not ideal for fast action or tracking compared to modern cameras).
• Modest 4.5 fps continuous shooting.
• Fixed non-touch LCD (no vari-angle or touchscreen).
• No 1080/60p video; video AF is basic contrast-based.
• Single card slot (no backup).
• Dated processor/sensor by today’s standards—newer cameras offer better dynamic range, higher resolution, faster/more accurate AF (e.g., Dual Pixel), 4K video, and more.

A successor, the EOS 6D Mark II (2017), improved resolution (26.2 MP), AF (45 all cross-type points), added Dual Pixel CMOS AF with vari-angle touchscreen, 1080/60p video, and other refinements while keeping a similar form factor.
The original EOS 6D remains a capable used option for stills-focused photographers prioritizing full-frame benefits, low light, and portability—especially when paired with quality EF primes or zooms (e.g., 24-105mm f/4L, 50mm f/1.4/1.8).
